UPDATE as of 10:58 a.m.: The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the shooting victim as 36-year-old Lazaro Valle-Matos. He died of a single gunshot wound to the chest.

INITIAL POST: Lakewood police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Sunday night at an apartment complex in the 10200 block of 47th Avenue Southwest.

Three of the victim’s friends were arrested on suspicion of assault and burglary. The shooter, who lives at the complex, has not been arrested.

“It appears this could be a case of self-defense,” Lt. Chris Lawler said.

The victim has not been identified. He was taken to an area hospital after the shooting, where he was pronounced dead.

The shooting happened about 9:10 p.m. inside one of the apartments. Detectives are still trying to determine what led up to the incident, but it appears the victim and some of his friends tried to force their way into an apartment.

“There’d been a dispute over parking outside of the apartments that escalated into a knife/gunfight,” Lawler said.

A knife was found lying by the car where officers found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound. A gun was found inside the apartment.
