King County sheriff’s deputies say a 66-year-old man shot two people outside his Maple Valley home this morning after finding them allegedly breaking into a storage container.

One man was killed and a woman badly injured in the shooting, which took place about 4 a.m. in the 23200 block of of 212 Avenue Southeast , deputies said.

The homeowner called 911 to report hearing people and banging noises on his property, sheriff’s spokeswoman Cindi West said. The line then went dead, West said. When the 911 operator reconnected with the man’s phone, he told her he’d shot two people, West said.

The woman has been taken by helicopter to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Detectives are being sent to the scene to investigate.
