Five months after their 10-month-old daughter died, a Kent couple has been charged with first-degree criminal mistreatment for allegedly abusing the girl in the weeks leading up to her death.

Joresha Palmer and Domonique Leonard are set to be arraigned Thursday. They remain jailed in lieu of $250,000, an amount King County prosecutors asked for because of the “likelihood” the couple will injure their surviving child or try to tamper with witnesses.

Prosecutors also argued they deserve a higher bail because of the “unimaginable pain and discomfort” the baby suffered.

Kent police were called to the family’s home Nov. 28 and found the girl, who was not breathing. An autopsy showed she had three broken ribs, broken bones in her leg and a head injury.

Palmer and Leonard denied knowledge of prior injuries but told detectives they noticed their daughter favored the leg that was not injured, according to court documents. They declined to seek medical treatment even after the baby’s grandmother recommended they do so.

A doctor examined the girl’s injuries and said they are consistent with child abuse and possibly being swung by the leg, being forcefully yanked or suffering a direct blow to the leg. The injuries were thought to be about three weeks old.
