Car fire near UW Tacoma draws crowd Post by Stacia Glenn / The News Tribune on April 3, 2013 at 8:45 am | April 3, 2013 8:45 am Credit: Dianne McGinness By Dianne McGinness, staff writer Flames erupted beneath a car near the campus of UW Tacoma this morning, drawing a crowd of nearly 20 onlookers as firefighters worked to douse the blaze. Starbucks employee Michelle Fortino called 911 about 7:45 a.m. after someone ran into the store and said a car was smoking outside. Tacoma firefighters arrived three minutes later. Fortino said the whole back end of the car above the wheel was on fire when she went outside. A crowd of about 15 to 20 people were gathered on the sidewalk near the car watching the flames be extinguished. They dispersed once the flames were out. The owner of the vehicle, who did not want to give her name, said that she thought the fire had probably started because of friction behind the wheel.
