UPDATE as of 4:40 p.m. The 2-year-old boy has been identified as Chayson Colley of Tacoma, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office. He died of blunt force trauma to the head and abdomen, and his death was a homicide, according to the office.

INITIAL POST: A Pierce County Superior Court commissioner this afternoon ordered a 19-year-old man held until Wednesday while police continue to investigate his involvement in the death of a 2-year-old boy.

Commissioner Meagan Foley ordered Jake Musga jailed in lieu of $1.5 million bail in the meantime.

Musga was arrested Saturday after someone called 911 to report an injured child in a downtown Tacoma hotel, deputy prosecutor Phil Sorensen told reporters outside court.  The boy later was declared dead.

Musga is not the child’s father, Sorensen said, but is dating the boy’s mother. He was baby-sitting Saturday morning while the mother was out visiting relatives, Sorensen said.

Sorensen said the boy died of “homicidal violence,” but neither he nor the Medical Examiner’s Office released a specific cause of death.

The deputy prosecutor said authorities are withholding most information from the public because “the investigation is at a critical stage.”

Formal charges are expected against Musga by Wednesday, including a possible murder charge, Sorensen said.
