A 56-year-old Parkland man who was missing five days was found safe this morning.

An observant bus driver spotted Jeff Sautell hitchhiking near Mountain Highway East and 224th Street East in Elk Plain about 8 a.m. The school bus driver recognized Sautell and called Pierce County sheriff’s deputies, who found the car that had picked up Sautell parked at a business a few blocks away.

He was taken for a mental health evaluation, sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

“We’re glad he’s OK and we’re checking to see what happened,” Troyer said. “He’d been living in the woods for five days.”

Sautell’s family reported him missing Saturday morning. His wife said she heard him come home from work at the Boeing plant in Frederickson Friday night. When she realized he hadn’t come to bed and had left his keys, wallet and cell phone in the home, she reported his disappearance.
