A 65-year-old woman killed Wednesday after speeding through an intersection and crashing her SUV into a tree near Spanaway has been identified as Estela Gonzalez.

Witnesses reported seeing her Ford Expedition driving recklessly through multiple intersections prior to the crash, which occurred about 10 a.m. at 152nd Street and 22nd Avenue East.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department is investigating what caused the accident and why Gonzalez was driving recklessly.

After running a stop sign, the woman’s SUV went through a guard rail and hit a tree, narrowly missing a nearby home. Gonzalez was not wearing a seat belt, sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.
