A woman died Wednesday morning after losing control of her SUV and crashing into a tree near Spanaway, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.
The accident occurred about 10:05 a.m. at 152nd Street and 22nd Avenue East.
She was driving north on 22nd Avenue East at a high rate of speed when she went through a stop sign, through a guard rail and struck a tree, sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.
The tree kept the vehicle from running into a nearby home, Troyer said.
The woman, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the Ford Expedition. Witnesses estimated she was driving about 70 miles per hour.
Some reported seeing the car driving recklessly through multiple intersections between 176th Street South and Pacific Avenue South and the site of the crash, Troyer said.
Officials are working to identify the woman.
