Kent apt fire

UPDATE as of 1:34 p.m.: Capt. Kyle Ohashi said the blaze was caused by a mattress that was leaning against a wall heater.

INITIAL POST: Six families were displaced this morning after a fire heavily damaged a Kent apartment building.

Neighbors in the 24600 block of Russell Road called 911 just before 9 a.m. to report flames coming from a third-floor apartment. A family of four that was moving out of the unit got out safely and firefighters evacuated other residents on the bottom two floors.

Crews contained the fire to the apartment where it started but other apartments suffered water damage.

The complex’s manager is helping the six families find temporary housing.

No injuries were reported and the cause is being investigated.
