Smoke from St. Patty’s Day cooking at Harmon Brewery sets off alarms at UW Tacoma

Fire crews were called to a University of Washington Tacoma building about 4 p.m. in the 1900 block of Commerce Street, after smoke alarms in a ground floor hallway and an elevator shaft started sounding, Tacoma Fire battalion chief Brian Hardy said.

Firefighters found extremely light smoke in the building, but nothing burning, Hardy said.

The source was grilling next door at the Harmon Brewery, he said; The exhaust from the restaurant exits toward the intake for the school’s building.

What made the exhaust heavy enough to set off the alarms?

St. Patrick’s Day, Hardy said:  ”This is the biggest day of the year for the Harmon.”

No fire, no injuries, just a busy grill downtown.
