Tacoma Fire accepting applications for entry-level candidates

The Tacoma Fire Department is asking entry-level firefighters to submit applications as the department builds an eligibility list they plan to hire off in the coming years.

While there are no plans to hire this year, we do anticipate that retirements and normal attrition will require us to hire new firefighters sometime in the future to fill vacancies,” department spokesman Joe Meinecke said.

Interested candidates have until 5 p.m. May 3 to submit an application to join the 357-member agency. The hourly salary is listed as $21.96 to $30.26.

The application process and written test – which is tentatively scheduled for early June – will take several months to complete. The eligibility list can be used for up to three years to hire firefighters, Meinecke said.
