West Pierce fire chief to retire Friday, brother appointed to take his place

West Pierce Fire & Rescue will have a new fire chief come Saturday, who is already familiar with his predecessor; They’re brothers.

As Ken Sharp prepares to retire Friday after 35 years with the department, Jim Sharp prepares to take his place, West Pierce spokeswoman Capt. Jenny Weekes said.

The West Pierce Board of Fire Commissioners announced Jim Sharp’s appointment March 5.

He’s been the project manager for the regional dispatch agency, South Sound 911 during the past year. He was hired as a firefighter by the University Place Fire Department in 1986, and was a chief officer for seven years.

West Pierce will host a pinning ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, at Station 31, 3631 Drexler Drive in University Place.
