Man booked into jail on charge of murder in death of Tacoma child, age 2

A 2-year-old child was killed Saturday morning in Tacoma, and a man has been booked into the Pierce County jail on suspicion of murder.

The News Tribune is not naming the man because he has not yet been formally charged.

Tacoma police did not release much information beyond the fact of the death, including the gender of the child, the location of the death or the relationship of the suspect to the victim. Tacoma police responded to the scene around 7:30 or 8 a.m., said Tacoma police spokeswoman Loretta Cool. There was “a pattern of abuse,” she said.

Traffic and 19th and Cedar in Tacoma blocked by police activity

Tacoma police have detained a man suspected of robbing the Key Bank branch this afternoon.

Police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said a man walked into the branch at South 11th and South L just before 5 p.m., displayed a gun and demanded cash. He then fled on foot.

Officers swarmed the area and spotted a man resembling the robber at South 19th and South Cedar about an hour ago, she said.  They detained him and another person at that intersection, which remains blocked off at this time.

Two more arrested in takeover-style robberies of Washington banks

Two men considered suspects in recent takeover-style robberies in Lakewood and Seattle have been arrested in Los Angeles, the FBI reported today.

Members of the L.A. Fugitive Task Force arrested the men Thursday evening.

They are among seven men believe responsible for a Sept. 6 robbery of the U.S. Bank branch in Lakewood and three other robberies in Seattle, the FBI reported.

In each case, groups of men entered the banks and demanded cash.

Man who terrorized Pierce County fast food workers sentenced to 60 years in prison

For two months in 2010, people who worked at fast food restaurants across Pierce County lived in fear.

Laptop stolen from Gig Harbor contained privileged information on 652 DSHS clients

A laptop containing confidential information on 652 state Department of Social and Health Services clients was stolen from Gig Harbor and later recovered at a pawn shop, the department announced today.

Officials said the thieves do not appear to have broken the security measures and accessed the files, which includes health information. The affected clients were all receiving services from the department’s Economic Services Administration and have been notified via letter.

“Blood bath” threat made to Kentwood High School; students being dismissed early

Kentwood High School in Covington was dismissed at 10:15 a.m. this morning after receiving an emailed threat of a “hostage take-over and blood bath,” King County sheriff’s spokeswoman Cindi West said.

Several deputies and police dogs are searching the school campus.

West said it looks like a former student hacked into another former student’s email account and sent the threat. Kent police are helping to identify the suspect.

Puyallup man charged with shooting son, daughter to face new charges Monday

A Puyallup man charged with shooting his son and daughter in the head while they slept will appear in court Monday to face upgraded charges since his son died Thursday.

Michael League will now face two first-degree murder counts and be rearraigned Monday, deputy prosecutor Phil Sorensen said. League pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder earlier this week in the shootings of Danielle Faucett, 43, and Dennis League, 46.

Man fatally shot at Tacoma motel

A man was fatally shot in a Tacoma motel room early this morning, police said.

Officers responded to the Morgan Motel at 7031 Pacific Ave. about 12:15 a.m. on a shots fired call. They found the dead man inside one of the rooms, police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as 42-year-old Donald Phily.

The department is not releasing any further details at this time. No suspect information has been released.
