babyOne couple’s rush to the hospital late Tuesday wasn’t quick enough.

A Pierce County man had to deliver his daughter after his pregnant wife went into labor near the interchange of state Route 512 and Interstate 5.

“The baby wasn’t waiting for anybody and he had no choice but to pull over,” trooper Guy Gill said.

Troopers began receiving 911 calls about 10:30 p.m. about a Dodge Challenger driving erratically on the freeway. Moments later, they heard from the soon-to-be dad, who advised dispatchers that the baby wasn’t waiting for them to arrive at Madigan Army Medical Center.

By the time medics arrived, the only thing left to be done was cut the umbilical cord.

Mother and daughter were taken to the hospital to be checked out and are “doing just fine,” Gill said.
