A man was taken for a mental evaluation after grabbing the steering wheel while his mother was driving and crashing their vehicle Monday night, Tacoma police said.

Mother and son were driving in the 7000 block of South I Street when the son, who is an adult, began talking about wanting to kill himself. The man then yanked the steering wheel to the right and the vehicle crashed their the fence of a home and struck a tree, Lt. David O’Dea said.

The man fled on foot and was taken into custody a few blocks away. His mother was cited for driving on a suspended license.

No major injuries were reported.
