No one disputes there was an explosion in Tacoma Wednesday night.
A 32-year-old man called 911 about 11 p.m. to report that he and a friend were driving near state Route 16 and Jackson Avenue when an explosion pulled off the roof of his car. He waited until he returned home to University Place to report it.
Police say there was an explosion, but it was in the 2100 block of N. Shirley Avenue, where officers found a “debris field” with pieces of the same car model the victim was driving strewn about.
Several calls came in earlier in the night about shots being fired in that area. Police believe the reported shots were actually some kind of explosion.
Both the man and his passenger were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police impounded the man’s car and are waiting to obtain a search warrant to look through it.
Check back later for details on what the explosion was all about.
