Tacoma firefighters battled flames at a two-story apartment complex in Fircrest this morning, the department reported.

Crews were called about 10 a.m. to Fircrest Gardens, 1425 Rainier Drive, and found several residents had already evacuated the building. They extinguished the blaze by 10:10 a.m. and checked every apartment to ensure nobody was inside. All four units were affected by the fire and five people were displaced.

No injuries were reported. The cause is under investigation.

Although some residents reported hearing explosions or possibly ammunition going off, fire spokesman Joe Meinecke said the popping noises were likely water hitting electrical outlets.
