An early estimate for the damages to a Tacoma retirement community that caught fire earlier this week and forced the evacuation of 144 seniors is $141,000, according to the Tacoma Fire Department.
An electrical problem sparked the blaze in Life Manor Retirement Community’s common area Tuesday morning. It totaled the building that housed the kitchen, dining room and activity room and caused some smoke damage to the independent living hall.
Twelve people who live in the independent living hall were taken to area hospitals after the fire.
Pastor Dean Curry of Life Center Church said the cleaning is set to be finished tonight and all but 27 residents will return home Friday afternoon. Those 27 residents, who live on the second floor, which was the most heavily smoke damaged, are expected to return late next week.
