It started with an online advertisement for a back rub and ended with one man chasing another out of a Fife hotel room with a hammer.

Police say it was a husband and wife team that lured men to motels to rob them.

Pierce County prosecutors charged Floyd Hutchins, 40, with second-degree robbery, attempted robbery and second-degree promotion of prostitution. His wife Michelle Hutchins, 37, is charged with second-degree robbery and second-degree attempted robbery. Both pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Bail was set at $50,000 for Floyd Hutchins and $25,000 for Michelle Hutchins.

Charging documents give this account:

Eric Bakke called police Jan. 13 to report that he was about to have sex with a woman when a man busted into the motel room, grabbed a hammer off the table and began yelling at the woman.

“Victim Bakke was terrified but victim Bakke noted that the woman he was with did not seem surprised,” documents state. “Victim Bakke fled the room naked.”

Bakke initially told police he already knew the woman, but later changed his story and admitted he found an ad on and offered the woman $100 for sex.

Officers reviewed surveillance footage at the motel in the 3500 block of Pacific Highway East and saw Floyd Hutchins pacing outside the room before using a key card to go inside. Bakke came running out a minute later.

Bakke’s clothing was later found in the motel room and a nearby trash can.

Bakke has been charged with patronizing a prostitute, patronizing by computer means and making a false statement to a public servant.

Police tried to reach the Hutchins’ but had no luck. After scanning ads on, they found an ad believed to be put up by Michelle Hutchins and an undercover detective arranged to meet her at a motel room Jan. 18.

She was arrested without incident when she walked into the room. When Floyd Hutchins arrived outside the motel door, he also was taken into custody. He was carrying a large folding knife.

Floyd Hutchins later admitted posting ads depicting him and his wife in sexual poses soliciting sex for money. Michelle Hutchins insisted she only massaged men but did not prostitute herself.
