A black woman in her early 20s was found dead in an alleyway in the 1200 block of South Ainsworth Avenue this afternoon and Tacoma police are investigating what they say are suspicious circumstances surrounding her death, spokeswoman Loretta Cool said.

A nearby homeowner found the body frozen in the alleyway just after 3 p.m. and called 911, Cool said.

The deceased woman has not yet been identified, Cool said.

The presence of blood and location of the body makes the death suspicious, she said, but an autopsy on the frozen body will not be immediately possible due to the state of the remains.

Officers spoke with witnesses, canvassed the area and collected evidence at the scene, she added.

“We’re handling it as if we would any suspicious death,” Cool said.
