Demolition crews tearing down the old Nalley Valley viaduct accidentally dropped a large section of the old concrete structure onto South Tacoma Way today at approximately 2 p.m.
The structure fell onto a portion of the road that was closed to accommodate the demolition. No injuries resulted from the accident, according to Washington State Department of Transportation officials.
The impact of the structure crushed a city water main, according to Tacoma Police spokeswoman Loretta Cool, sending water spraying throughout the area. A gas line was also damaged, according to Kevin Dayton, WSDOT’s Olympic Region Administrator.
City fire and utility crews shut off utilities.
South Tacoma Way is expected to remain closed from South Pine to Wilkeson through the weekend, Dayton said.
