UPDATE as of 7:09 p.m. The fire appears to be out, based on results from thermal imaging cameras that don’t show any hot spots, according to Tacoma Fire.

Firefighters will monitor the building overnight to make sure the blaze doesn’t rekindle.

UPDATE as of 5:25 p.m. The fire is in a structure used by Valley Line Cabinets, according to Tacoma Fire. Crews put out flames in the duct system used to suck sawdust out of the building, but the fire spread to the metal hopper that collects the dust. The hopper, which is about 35 feet tall, has a slight tilt and is in danger of collapsing, Tacoma Fire says. Emergency workers evacuated the building next door as a precaution.

INITIAL POST: Firefighters are working to put out a fire at a commercial building in the 1800 block of East D Street, according to Tacoma Fire.

The building appears to be for lease, Tacoma Fire said.

Crews did not see fire showing when they arrived at the scene, but used a thermal energy camera and found fire inside.

The building may have been vacant, and no one has been injured, Tacoma Fire said.
