Tacoma police arrested a 37-year-old man today after he allegedly shot his girlfriend then led officers on a short chase through the central part of the city.

Police spokesman Loretta Cool said the man was booked into the Pierce County Jail for investigation of domestic violence-related assault.

The action started when a woman showed up an area hospital with a gunshot wound to the stomach, Cool said. Police were called, and the woman, after telling a variety of stories, eventually told officers she’d been shot by her boyfriend.

“She was very uncooperative,” Cool said.

Officers still were at the hospital when the boyfriend arrived about 1:15 p.m.

An officer attempted to talk to the man, but he ran to his small pickup and drove away, Cool said.

Police gave chase, and the man lost control near South 17th and South Fife streets, crashing the truck through a privacy fence.

He then ran off but was tracked down and arrested, Cool said.

No other injuries were reported.
