The Tacoma Police Department has identified the officer who fatally shot a 22-year-old woman after she pointed a gun at the officer as Sean Ovens.
Ovens, 36, has been with the department for eight years.
The shooting occurred Saturday in the 3500 block of South Fawcett Avenue. Sophia Strickland’s mother called police about 9:45 p.m. to report Strickland had fired several rounds inside their home.
Strickland refused to speak with officers and began walking down the stairs toward Ovens while pointing a gun at him, police have said. Ovens then shot her as she advanced.
Ovens remains on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated, which is standard procedure after a police shooting.
