UPDATE as of 6:15 p.m. The deceased woman has been identified as Sophia Strickland, 22 of Tacoma, by the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.

INITIAL POST: A Tacoma officer shot and killed a 22-year-old woman Saturday night after she pointed a gun at and advanced toward the officer, according to police.

A woman called police at 9:47 p.m. and said her daughter had just fired off several rounds inside the house in the 3500 block of South Fawcett Avenue, and that she thought the daughter may have killed herself, according to police spokeswoman Loretta Cool.

Officers arrived and found the daughter was still alive.

They tried to communicate with the daughter, who refused to communicate with them, according to police.

She had a handgun pointed at the officer, and started walking down a set of stairs toward the officer, according to police.

At that point the officer shot and killed the woman, police say.

She was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead, they said.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave, per procedure, according to police.

Tacoma police are investigating the shooting, and are not releasing further details about the shooting or the officer at this time, Cool said.
