West Pierce Fire & Rescue’s first chief announced today that he will retire March 15.

Ken Sharp, who became chief after the Lakewood and University Place fire departments merged last year, worked as a firefighter for 35 years.

He started with Lakewood Fire in 1977 and was appointed fire chief in 2007. Under his leadership, the two departments merged and contracted to serve the town of Steilacoom.

“I’ve been blessed in my career to work with some of the finest people in the profession,” Sharp said. “It’s been a great ride.”
