UPDATE: Stimson pleaded not guilty this afternoon and was ordered jailed on $2 million bail.

Stimson allegedly told detectives he did not try to rob Watson, as prosecutors contend, but shot the older man after he “charged” at him, court records show. That seems to contradict surveillance video evidence that apparently shows Stimson reaching his hand inside Watson’s truck at one point before he and Langford run away.

PREVIOUS POST: A 16-year-old boy charged in the shooting death of a Tacoma man last month was booked into Pierce County Jail on Sunday.

Prosecutors have charged James “JJ” Stimson with first-degree murder in the Nov. 18 death of David Watson, 45.

Marcus Langford, 16, is also charged with first-degree murder and second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm and has pleaded not guilty to both counts.

Police said the teens ran across Watson in the parking lot of a convenience store at South 56th and South Lawrence streets while Watson was searching for his lost dog.

After some kind of confrontation caught on surveillance tape, Stimson allegedly shot Watson and the teens took off running. Watson then got into his pickup truck, which ran off the road after a few blocks.

Residents found him and called 911. Watson died at the hospital; his dog was found uninjured nearby.

Since the shooting, Tacoma police have been searching for Stimson. He was found about 4 a.m. Sunday at a home near South 30th and South Tyler streets he was known to frequent, police spokesman Mark Fulghum said.
