Baby beaten on Hilltop

Child Protective Services took custody of a six-month-old baby in Tacoma’s Hilltop area Friday after a hospital exam revealed broken bones and other injuries consistent with abuse.

Tacoma Police said an 18-year-old mother reported leaving her baby with adult roommates in the 1400 block of Martin Luther King Way while she went out to do errands on Friday.

When she came back, police said, she noticed that the baby appeared to have pain in its shoulder. She took the child to the hospital, where x-rays revealed not only recently broken bones but also older injuries.

CPS was contacted and took custody of the baby, as well as another 2-year-old child that lived with the mother.

Nine other adults at the residence during the mother’s absence denied knowing that the child was injured or how the child received injuries, police said.
