Terry Carkner of Terry’s Berries Organic Farm on the edge of Tacoma remained in the intensive care unit of Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee today after a three-car accident Friday.

She and her husband, Dick Carkner, were driving to a conference in Pateros, Wash., in poor weather conditions, when they were T-boned Friday, he said.

Dick Carkner was driving a 2008 silver Toyota Camry east on U.S. Highway 2, and was turning left just before 10 a.m. onto Saunders Road near Dryden when they were hit by a blue 1988 Jeep Cherokee, according to the State Patrol. The Camry then spun and hit the front of a blue 1998 Ford Expedition, troopers said.

Dick Carkner and a 51-year-old Tacoma woman traveling with the Carkners were bruised, but otherwise OK, he said. Terry Carkner, though, was injured and transported to the hospital.

A 51-year-old Leavenworth woman driving the Jeep and her 17-year-old female passenger were also taken to the hospital with injuries, according to the State Patrol.

Trooper Darren Wright said the driver of the Camry, Dick Carkner, was cited with failure to yield.

“She’s making progress and she is going to come out of this,” Dick Carkner said. “People that know her would expect nothing else. She’s a pretty gritty lady. A lot of determination, and she’s going to need it.”

They’d like to thank friends, family, and their farm crew for their support, he said.

“She’s going to do all her physical therapy, and we’ll be out supervising the farm crew before you know it,” he added.
