UPDATE as of 10:21 a.m.: This morning’s shooting appears to have been fueled by alcohol and an ongoing argument between friends, police said.

“It sounds like they’d been drinking all day,” department spokesman Mark Fulghum said. “A couple of them were arguing back and forth and it came to a head when they were on their way to drop somebody off.”

A man in the backseat allegedly opened fire, striking one man in the head and a woman in the buttocks.

Detectives are interviewing the alleged shooter but have not arrested him.

“There’s a chance this may have been a self-defense situation,” Fulghum said.

Both the alleged shooter and victim were armed. It’s unclear whether the man who was fatally shot threatened the others with his gun.

INITIAL POST: Tacoma police are investigating a shooting early this morning that left one man dead and a woman injured.

The incident occurred about 1 a.m. in the 6200 block of McKinley Avenue. After people reported hearing shots, officers responded to the scene and  found a car had crashed into a fence in a church parking lot.

Inside the vehicle were five people, two of whom had been shot. A man shot in the head was pronounced dead at the scene; a woman shot in the buttocks was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive. Detectives are interviewing the other occupants of the vehicle to figure out what led up to the shooting.

Department spokesman Mark Fulghum said the car was moving when the shooting happened. A motive has not been determined. The shooter is believed to be one of the people in the vehicle.
