The pursuit of a suspected car thief ended with a Lakewood police officer shooting the man tonight in Tacoma after he fired at officers, according to Lakewood police.
Two officers traveling in a patrol car started chasing a suspected stolen vehicle at Gravelly Lake Drive and Interstate 5 about 9:49 p.m., and continued onto northbound I-5 until the suspect exited at East Portland Avenue, Lakewood police spokesman Chris Lawler said.
The officers used a maneuver to stop the car, at which point the suspect started shooting at them, Lawler said. The officers fired back, and the suspect was hit and taken to a local hospital, Lawler said, adding that his condition is unknown. Initial reports that the suspect had died at the scene were false, he said.
No officers were injured.
The patient was taken to a local trauma center with life-threatening injuries, according to Tacoma Fire.
Tacoma police will handle the investigation, and the officer will be put on paid administrative leave, per procedure, Lawler said.
The Portland Avenue exit was closed while crews responded.
UPDATE as of Monday: The driver remains in critical condition, and is a 35-year-old man, Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said.
