Teenager pleads not guilty to first-degree murder in death of Tacoma man

Marcus Langford, 16, pleaded not guilty today in Pierce County Superior Court to charges of first-degree murder and second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm in the death earlier this month of Tacoma’s David Watson.

Judge Kathryn Nelson ordered Langford, who is being prosecuted as an adult, jailed in lieu of $1 million bail. Nelson also issued an arrest warrant for 16-year-old James Stimson, who is suspected of firing the shot that killed Watson.

Prosecutors contend Langford and Stimson robbed Watson as he sat in his truck in the early-morning hours of Nov. 18  in the parking lot of a convenience store near South 56th and South Lawrence streets. Watson had gone out to look for his dog, which had run away, when he apparently encountered the two boys. Deputy prosecutor Phil Sorensen said the teenagers demanded money from Watson then shot him when he reached for a gun Stimson was holding.

Watson managed to drive a couple of blocks before he wrecked his truck. Nearby residents found him and called police.

Tacoma police arrested Langford on Tuesday night while investigating an unrelated shooting on the city’s East Side.

Watson’s brother, Jonathan Watson, attended Langford’s arraignment this afternoon. He said he was glad there had been an arrest.

“I want justice for my brother,” Jonathan Watson said. “I want the stiffest penalty the court will allow.”

Here’s video of Jonathan Watson talking to reporters after Langford’s arraignment:

I am deeply sorry for you loss, these younn men needvto stay in prison they knew what they were doing. They had a choice and they chose to take a life. When I say both meaning Marcus Langford could have stopped or tried to stop Stimson but he didnt.
May God bring you peace. And keep these boys where they belong.
