Three times as many home cooking fires happen nationally on Thanksgiving than other days of the year, according to Tacoma Fire.

Here’s a checklist from the fire department for  safe Thanksgiving cooking:

-Heat cooking oil slowly. Watch it closely; it can catch fire quickly.

-Have a lid close by to smother potential grease fires.

-Keep kids at least three feet away from the stove.

-Keep packaging away from burners.

-Don’t leave cooking unattended.

-Make sure your smoke alarms are working.
