With this week’s downpour, Tacoma Fire sent out tips for flood preparedness:
Before a flood:
-Know evacuation routes and what the risk of flooding is where you live.
-Clean leaves from storm drains and gutters.
-Have a disaster supply kit. FEMA recommends this list.
During a flood:
-Don’t walk or drive through flooded areas.
-Be aware that fast-moving water that’s six inches deep can sweep you off your feet, and two feet of water can sweep away cars. Water can been deeper than it appears.
-Report downed power lines to Tacoma Public Utilities at 253-502-8602. Do not try to move them, and call 911 if the situation is life-threatening.
-Follow the National Weather Service to monitor conditions. Disaster preparedness information can be found at ready.gov, and the Regional Public Information Network provides alerts from local agencies.
