A person driving a stolen car led police on a chase through University Place that ended when the alleged thief crashed into Puget Sound near Narrows Marina, authorities reported.
The action started about 6:20 p.m. when police spotted a stolen car being driven in the vicinity of 40th Street West and Bridgeport Way West, said Ed Troyer, spokesman for University Place police.
The driver fled when police tried to pull over the car and eventually led police from University Place and Fircrest west on South 19th Street, where the stolen vehicle plunged into the water, Troyer said.
A male and female inside the car safely swam to shore where they were taken into custody, he said.
Sheriff’s department divers were in the water about 7:30 p.m. attempting to retrieve the car, which was in about 10 feet of water.
