Man killed in Carbonado crash identified

A 23-year-old man found dead Thursday after rolling his truck off a steep hill in an off-road park near Carbonado has been identified as Joseph Michael Castro.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy today to determine the cause of death.

Castro, of Auburn, was found some distance away from his truck, which went over the cliff near Evans Creek Wednesday night and rolled about 25 times before landing on its top near a wooded area.

A 21-year-old friend riding with Castro went for help after finding Castro unresponsive after the crash. The friend hiked barefoot up the hill through the night to seek help in the small town near Mount Rainier National Park.

By the time searchers reached Castro, he was dead. It appears he managed to walk some distance before succumbing to injuries suffered in the accident.
