A Renton man being investigated for vehicular homicide after a fatal three-vehicle crash that shut down southbound Interstate 5 in Federal Way on Sunday was in court today.

King County Superior Court set bail at $100,000 for Stephen Palmer, 21.

Palmer was driving a vehicle involved in a crash that sent a double-tanker truck off the roadway and into the freeway sound wall. The truck caught fire, and the 68-year-old driver, Joseph Bartkowski of Sumner, died in the crash.

Prosecutors have until Nov. 6 to decide whether to charge Palmer, who was arrested Sunday for investigation of vehicular homicide.

The Washington State Patrol said drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash.

Anyone who saw the crash or the vehicles involved beforehand is asked to call Detective Russ Haake at 425-401-7717.

A black Nissan Altima, tan Toyota Camry and the semi truck were involved, according to the State Patrol.
