The 21st fire chief for Tacoma was sworn in this afternoon.

James Duggan, who has been with the department for 29 years, was sworn in during a ceremony at the Greater Tacoma Convention & Trade Center.

He became interim fire chief after former Chief Ronald Stephens retired in March and was appointed chief last month.

Duggan previously spent six years as assistant fire chief and managed the Emergency Medical Services Division.
