A 12-year-old girl was seriously injured this morning after a hit-and-run driver struck the girl on her bicycle. Kent police said they are interviewing the woman they believe was behind the wheel.
The accident happened about 7:45 a.m. in the 900 block of North Central Avenue. Firefighters were called to the scene and found the girl lying in the street with head and torso injuries.
The driver, a 58-year-old Kent woman, fled the scene. The girl, who attends Mill Creek Middle School, was taken to a hospital.
Witnesses gave officers a description of the driver and the car. Police eventually found the woman believed to have been driving at her place of employment.
Police said recklessness or alcohol did not contribute to the crash. Factors like lighting, weather and visibility may have contributed.
“Our goal is to have a complete picture of the events leading to this collision before we make a decision on charges,” Assistant Police Chief Pat Lowery said.
