A 46-year-old man shot to death by a SWAT officer after allegedly pointing a gun at police outside his Sumner home has been identified as Patrick Durnford.
Durnford called 911 about 3 p.m. Wednesday and threatened to kill himself before bunking down in his home in the 7000 block of 142nd Avenue East.
After more than an hour standoff with Metro SWAT, police said Durnford came out of the home and pointed a weapon at officers. The officer, fearing for his life, fired.
Durnford died of a gunshot wound to the head, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The officer has been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated, which is standard procedure after a police shooting.
