Tacoma police are downtown investigating an armed robbery and pistol-whipping near the Pierce County courthouse.

The incident occurred about 10:15 a.m. at the intersection of South 9th Street and Tacoma Avenue. Police said a man was trying to rob the victim and the gun accidentally discharged when he struck the victim in the face. The bullet did not hit anyone and the robber got away.

The Tacoma School District locked down its Central Administration Building as a precaution, officials said.

No other information was immediately available.
