A 35-year-old drunken merchant marine sailor was arrested Monday night after allegedly assaulting a Tacoma police officer.

Police were called to the 5600 block of Marine View Drive about 9:30 p.m. to break up an argument between two men over money.

While the officer was trying to defuse the situation, the sailor chest bumped the officer and continued to be combative after he was on the ground. The officer eventually used a Taser gun to control him.

Police said the sailor repeatedly bashed his head into the pavement after being handcuffed on the pavement. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of several lacerations to the head.

The sailor reportedly just returned from six weeks at sea and was visiting friends and family in the area.
