A regional hazardous materials team from South King, Renton and SeaTac fire departments was responding to a Federal Way apartment complex tonight after several residents reported a foul odor was making them ill.
Gordie Olsen, South King’s assistant chief, said two persons had been transported to area hospitals for observation and a dozen others including two firefighters were being watched at the scene for further ill effects.
The hazardous materials specialists were investigating a chemical that apparently was spread on the lawn at the Azalea Apartments in the 30800 block of 16th Place Southwest.
The hazmat team had yet to determine the substance’s identity. They were consulting with the complex’s manager and with its landscape contractor to find out with what they were dealing.
Residents of the complex were being advised to stay inside.
