UPDATE as of 1:38 p.m. The officer involved in the incident has been identified as Bret Terwilliger, 29. He has been with the department for five years.
INITIAL POST: A man accused of dragging a Tacoma police officer during a traffic stop was arrested Wednesday.
Pierce County sheriff’s deputies pulled over a vehicle driving without headlights in the 5300 block of East I Street and discovered the suspect was a passenger in the car. Although the man gave deputies a false name, they recognized him from a flier distributed to law enforcement with the man’s photo.
The man was booked into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of first-degree assault.
The original incident occurred late Monday in the 8200 block of East F Street.
After the officer pulled the man over because he recognized his vehicle as being wanted in connection with a domestic violence warrant, the man refused to obey commands. Police say he suddenly grabbed the officer and began driving away, dragging the officer beside him.
The officer, a five-year veteran of the department, fired his gun at the driver to free himself. It does not appear the driver was struck. The officer was not injured.
