A kindergartner at Arlington Elementary School took a wrong turn on the way to the front office Tuesday afternoon and ended up about seven blocks away on Tacoma Mall Boulevard.

The 5-year-old girl was called to the front office to be picked up early by her mother, but when she didn’t arrive after several minutes, school staff called 911, Tacoma Public Schools spokesman Dan Voelpel said.

The mother and school officials looked for the girl outside, and a custodian told them a youngster had walked down the sidewalk away from the school.

As staff were on the phone giving the child’s description to the police, officers reported that a girl matching that description had been found unharmed along Tacoma Mall Boulevard.

The girl had walked out a door next to the office, Voelpel said.

The principal of the school has decided that parents picking up kindergartners early will now retrieve them from the classroom, rather than the office, Voelpel added.
