A woman found an explosive device in the gas hatch of her vehicle this afternoon when she stopped to get fuel at Fred Meyer in Auburn, police said.
Auburn police responded about 2:30 p.m. to the parking lot at 8th Street Northeast and Auburn Way North, Commander Mike Hirman said.
The woman, from Auburn, called when she saw what looked like a fuse and tape sticking out of the hatch.
Hirman said the Federal Way bomb squad deactivated the device and police finished securing the scene just before 5 p.m.
Investigators found black powder in the device, which Hirman said means it was an active improvised explosive device.
Police are still investigating where the bomb came from, but “it doesn’t appear to be random,” Hirman said.
