A 36-year-old motorcyclist died Monday night while speeding down a Lakewood street and popping wheelies, police said.

A patrol officer spotted Matthew Swan about 6:40 p.m. traveling about 100 mph, popping wheelies and weaving in and out of traffic, Lt. Chris Lawler said.

The officer turned around to try and pull the motorcyclist over but he had crashed at Gravelly Lake Drive and Washington Boulevard before she caught up to him.

There was no pursuit and police said Swan lost control of his bike.

He was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
