Blown transformer near UW Tacoma causes power outage, Link service down

A blown transformer near UW Tacoma has cut power in the area, according to Tacoma Fire.

No one was hurt and no fire resulted from the explosion, they said.

Sound Transit says Tacoma Link light rail is down, near the end of pop/rock artist Justin Bieber’s Concert at the Tacoma Dome. Buses will run between the Tacoma Dome and Theater tonight to transport concert-goers, they said.

Chris Gleason, Tacoma Public Utilities spokeswoman, said power crews are still assessing the outage and haven’t confirmed the blown transformer. However, she said the outage had been located to an issue with underground power equipment near South 17th Street and Commerce Street.

She said power is out at the university and in the surrounding area for about 32 customers.

She expects power to be restored tonight.

Tacoma police plan to help direct traffic after the concert, she said, because some traffic signals were affected.
