UPDATE as of 5:33 p.m.: Selley pleaded not guilty to the charge of second-degree murder. His bail was set at $1 million.

INITIAL POST: Pierce County prosecutors charged a 41-year-old man with second-degree murder today after his girlfriend, whom he’d been accused of assaulting last month, died Friday.

William Selley is to be arraigned in Superior Court today on a charge of second-degree murder in the death of Kathryn Southward, 29, of Gig Harbor.

Southward was taken to the hospital Sept. 26 with numerous injuries, including broken ribs, a collapsed lung, a broken bone in her neck and other internal injuries.

The victim’s family told police Selley was known to abuse Southward, and she blamed him for her injuries in an interview with detectives, court records show.

Selley has denied beating Southward, saying she suffered her injuries during a number of falls.

He originally was charged with first-degree assault in the case.
