UPDATE as of 8:18 p.m.: The medical examiner’s office has identified the victim as 30-year-old Jimmy Arevalo of Tacoma.

INITIAL POST: A Tacoma man is dead and police are searching for a suspect following a shooting at a house party early Sunday.

The shooting happened at about 12:45 a.m. at home in the 2000 block of South 29th St., according to Tacoma police. A resident was entertaining friends at a party when the suspect arrived. He was driving a light colored older model SUV and was unknown to the partygoers.

“I don’t think the people at the party actually knew him,” police spokesman Mark Fulghum said. “He may have come with somebody who knew somebody else.”

An argument ensued between a man at the party and the stranger, who then pulled a handgun and discharged one round into the ground and several rounds into the victim. The resident was taken to Tacoma General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Fulghum said the victim appeared to be in his early 30s. He was not sure if the victim lived at the residence.

He was not sure about the age of the suspect, since they don’t yet have anyone in custody.

Partygoers were detained and questioned by investigating officers and detectives.

Police were investigating and looking for the suspect this morning.
